A little over eight years ago, I wrote and recorded my first ever guided meditation. I suppose it was fitting that it was called, ‘Gratitude‘, because it was such a good place to start that particular journey. You know that saying, ‘not by us, but through us’? That meditation was a gift to me, directly from somewhere sacred. I suspect it came straight from the heart of the Universe. The words just flowed out of my fingers onto the keyboard. The background music came my way as if by design, as Sean McCleary’s ‘Midnight Snow’ was the only piece that seemed to work. It literally came to me along a path of coincidental experiences.
That meditation changed my life. Currently, I am revisiting some of the guided meditations I have created over the past decade, including ‘Gratitude‘. And when I listened to it again after so long, I realised why so many of my listeners on Insight Timer post reviews telling me about their emotional experiences while working with this guided meditation. I, and I suspect the Universe, intended its words to open hearts, as in our gratitude lie the seeds of our abundance. If we allow ourselves to enter the sacred space of gratitude, the Universe opens its big heart, and many good things begin to flow to us. The energy of gratitude also heals our own hearts, letting in the light of love and forgiveness.
When your life begins to appear hopeless, you have nowhere to turn and you feel as if no one can help you, or if you pray and feel as if your prayers get only as far as the ceiling, drag yourself up by your boot straps and move into a space of gratitude. Just say: ‘I am grateful for … ‘, and let your mind complete the sentence by reminding you of one small thing that you can be grateful for. You do not even have to say it out loud. A whisper in the silence of the night will be as powerful. As your gratitude list begins to build on that one thing that you put at the top of your list, the powerful energy of gratitude will start to loosen the invisible chains around your heart. The practice of gratitude is a daily life line for many, regardless of religion, denomination, or culture. If you immerse yourself in the practice of gratitude while in a meditative state – for example by using the guided meditation ‘Gratitude‘ – your experience becomes truly transformative. And who knows, you might even heal your life.
