Most people experience times when one part of them wants one thing while another part wants the opposite — a part that wants to rest and a part that insists on pushing harder, or a part that longs for change and a part that fears it. These conflicting parts create the familiar push-pull that leaves us stuck.
Parts Therapy, developed by American hypnotherapist and psychologist Dr Roy Hunter, is a gentle and highly structured method for resolving this kind of internal conflict.
In a session the therapist helps the client identify the different parts involved, understand the positive intention behind each one, and then mediate an agreement between them. The process is respectful of every part; nothing is forced or rejected. When the parts reach a workable internal agreement, the outer behaviour and emotional tension usually shift naturally.
It is precise, practical work that stays focused on the present rather than exploring past lives or deep analytical material. Clients often leave with a clearer understanding of their inner conflicts and why those conflicts arose. They tend to be less hard on themselves once they realise that inner difficulties usually appear for a reason, and that they already carry the wisdom needed to restore greater harmony.
From a Parts Therapist’s perspective, negotiating a truce among the various parts of one person’s personality often resembles a group of toddlers in a boardroom — each trying to have its say about important matters while getting distracted and forgetting the point of the meeting. Our internal parts are not always wise, reasonable, or natural team players. They emerge to handle a particular aspect of our lives, and they do not always consider the wider consequences of their efforts to protect us. If a part first appeared when we were very young, it does not automatically mature with us. The frightened or angry five-year-old can still rise up whenever pain threatens.
Who do you want in charge of your decisions — a part that is frightened, angry, or sad? Or would it be better to have greater harmony in your inner world, where the different parts of you can agree and work together according to a plan that comes from your own deeper wisdom?
That is Parts Therapy in a nutshell. The beauty of the process is that the parts themselves help build the solution. They learn to compromise and adjust their methods. And through it all, one thing becomes clear: every part of the human psyche is working toward the highest good of the person, however imperfectly it may go about it. Once the parts understand one another and see that there is a better way, they are almost always willing to try.
